In 1991 I spent an extended period in New York. The photographs taken during this time do not show the glittering side of Manhattan with its famous skyscrapers, but rather the overlooked places rarely noticed by tourists. Especially around the Brooklyn Bridge, in the streets of South Street and Water Street, I wandered for days, observing everyday life.
One cloudless Sunday, a trip with friends led me to Coney Island. The vibrant scenes in the amusement park, along the boardwalks, and among hobby fishermen offering their crabs for sale immediately captivated me. I tried to make myself invisible as a photographer and capture the moment unaltered.
For a long time, the negatives remained untouched in their sleeves. More than three decades later, I rediscovered and digitized them, surprised by their intensity. With this distance in time, the images have taken on a new meaning for me - and perhaps now reveal their true presence.
